What government energy saving grants are available?

Energy Company Obligation (ECO) Scheme
The ECO grants scheme is currently in its fourth phase commonly known as ECO4. It’s a government backed scheme designed to improve energy efficiency in homes in England, Scotland, and Wales that aren’t currently energy efficient. It offers a range of improvements, including electric storage heaters, heat pumps, boilers, insulation, central heating, and solar panels. From cold and drafty stone-built cottages to homes without central heating, ECO has transformed millions of UK homes since it was first launched.
Do I Qualify? To qualify for ECO4 funding you’ll need to be a homeowner or tenant and receiving specific tax credits or benefits, such as Working tax credit, Child Tax Credit, Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, Pension Credit, Job Seekers Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance or Income support. Local Authority Flex (LA Flex)
If you don’t currently receive any of the benefits required for ECO4, you could still obtain funding through a government-backed initiative known as LA Flex. This part of the ECO grant scheme allows local authorities to decide who gets funding for energy improvements.
Do I Qualify? There are several routes to qualify for LA Flex funding. For example, you could qualify if your home has an EPC rating of E, F, or G and a total annual income of £31,000 or less; or if someone living in the property has a long term health condition such as arthritis, diabetes, limited mobility, a cardiovascular condition, a respiratory disease etc . Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS)
If your home is difficult to keep warm and your energy costs are rising, it could be due to poor insulation. Insulation, whether it’s loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, or room in roof insulation, is one of the best ways to solve the problem. The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) offers hope for low-income and low-efficiency homes with energy saving grants for insulation.
Do I Qualify? GBIS energy efficiency grants are available if your home falls into a certain tax band, or you have a low EPC. Read more about Great British Insulation Scheme.

What energy saving measures are covered by the grant schemes?
Cavity wall insulation is installed between the inner and outer walls of a property, to reduce heat loss through the wall. Properties of brick construction which were built from 1920 onwards normally have a cavity wall (a survey will be required to determine if your property has a cavity wall that is suitable to be insulated). Properties built from 2002 onwards normally already have cavity wall insulation installed (as cavity wall insulation is now a requirement of building regulations for new properties).
Cavity wall insulation is one of the best ways to make your home warmer and save money on heating bills. Approx 35% of heat is lost through uninsulated cavity walls, so by insulating the cavity savings of over £500* per year can be made (*based on a detached property with a mains gas boiler)
Funding for cavity wall insulation is normally only available for existing properties, the grants for cavity insulation are not provided for new build properties. For more information please visit the cavity wall insulation grant page
Loft insulation is one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to reduce heat loss from your home and save money on fuel bills. If your loft has 100mm (4 inches) or less of insulation, you may be entitled to a loft insulation grant to increase the depth of insulation to 300mm (12 inches).
Approximately 25% of heat is lost through an uninsulated loft, so by installing 300mm of loft insulation in the attic savings of over £445 per year can be made For more information please visit the loft insulation grant page
Properties that were built before 1920 were normally constructed using either stone or solid brick walls, which are both very inefficient at retaining heat within the property. 45% of heat is lost through an uninsulated solid wall. Internal Wall Insulation (IWI) is installed on the inside of solid walls to reduce heat loss and it can also help reduce mould and condensation problems within a property. By installing Internal Wall Insulation on a solid wall property, typical savings of over £660 per year can be made

External Wall Insulation (EWI) is normally installed on properties constructed of stone, solid brick or concrete. However, EWI can also be installed on homes with cavity walls which may not be suitable for cavity wall insulation. 45% of heat is lost through an uninsulated solid wall. External Wall Insulation is installed on the outside of the solid walls to reduce heat loss and it can also help to prevent problems with penetrating damp within a property. By installing External Wall Insulation on a solid wall property, typical savings of over £660 per year can be made (*based on a detached property with a mains gas boiler).

Room in Roof Insulation is suitable for properties that have sloping ceilings and which have no loft (or a very small loft space). The type of property that requires Room in Roof Insulation is usually dormer bungalows, barn conversions or homes which have previously had a loft conversion which was not insulated at the time of conversion.
Insulation is installed on the sloping ceilings, walls and within any loft space (if applicable). Approximately 25% of heat is lost through an uninsulated Room in Roof, so by insulating the roof space, savings of over £445 per year can be made

Solar PV panels convert the suns energy into electricity for your home. The solar panels will produce electricity every day of the year and any electricity that you don’t use in your home will be exported to the National Grid and you will receive a monthly income for this surplus electricity via the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme

An Air Source Heat Pump is the most energy efficient way of heating a property – for every unit of electricity they use, they produce three units of heat – which is an efficiency of 300% (for comparison a modern gas boiler has an average efficiency of 90%). Air Source Heat Pumps work very well in conjunction with solar PV panels as the solar will provide the electricity to run the heat pump.

High Heat Retention (HHR) Storage Heaters were introduced in 2018 and are a lot more energy efficient than standard electric storage heaters. HHR storage heaters can store heat for longer periods and include enhanced insulation to ensure heat is only released when it is needed. They also have more accurate controls, including a thermostat and timer (which can normally be controlled via an app on a mobile phone); and they are able to estimate the next days heating demand, based on heating habits and climatic conditions.

If you currently have a non-condensing gas boiler in your property, you may qualify for a new boiler grant. Condensing gas boilers were introduced in the UK in 2005 and are a lot more efficient than non-condensing boilers. If your existing gas boiler was installed after the 1st April 2005 then it will already be a condensing boiler and we will be unable to obtain funding for a replacement boiler.

If your home does not currently have any type of boiler that is connected to radiators, you may qualify for a Central Heating grant. If your property already has a gas meter installed then you may be eligible for a gas boiler and radiators to be fitted. Alternatively if your home is not connected to the mains gas network, you may qualify for an Air Source Heat Pump with radiators to be installed. Either of these central heating systems will improve the comfort of your home and substantially lower your fuel bills.
