What is the Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme?

The ECO4 scheme is a government-backed energy efficiency scheme designed to encourage UK energy companies to make homes more efficient through improvements.

Here’s more about the scheme:

Aim: The ECO4 program aims to address fuel poverty and decrease carbon emissions.

How it Works: Energy firms in the UK are obligated to enhance energy efficiency in homes across England, Scotland, and Wales. They select their partners and choose which initiatives to support. The grant is provided directly to the installers making the improvements.

Duration: The ECO4 scheme started on 1 April 2022 and will end on 31 March 2026, or earlier, if the funding has been fully allocated prior to this date.

Target Homes: ECO4 targets homes with poor energy efficiency and higher heating costs as a result. The program specifically focuses on residences with an EPC rating between D and G.

Improvement Goals: Energy enhancements aim to elevate homes in Angus from EPC bands D and E to a minimum of band C. Properties in bands F and G should achieve at least band D.

Types of Improvements: ECO4 provides an impressive selection of home upgrades, including insulation, renewable heating solutions, and solar panel installation.

In a nutshell, the ECO4 initiative encourages energy providers to enhance homes lacking in energy efficiency, with an emphasis on supporting vulnerable and low-income households.

What Energy-Saving Measures Are Available?

Angus residents will have the choice of the following energy-saving measures:

Electric Storage Heaters: High heat retention storage heaters utilise cheap off-peak electricity to charge overnight and the heaters then release the heat slowly throughout the day. Storage heaters can be a much more energy efficient and cost effective way of heating a property as opposed to electric convector heaters.

External Wall Insulation – EWI involves installing insulation boards on the outside walls of the property and rendering over the top. EWI is a great way of insulating a solid wall property. However, it is not suitable if the property is a listed building or in a conservation area.

Loft Insulation: Adds or upgrades insulation in the attic to retain heat within the habitable rooms in the property.

Internal Wall Insulation: This work involves installing insulation and plasterboard on the inside walls of the property. This is a very effective way of insulating older properties that are constructed with solid brick or solid stone walls.

Cavity Wall Insulation: Polystyrene beads are inserted within the cavity between the external and internal walls to reduce heat loss via the walls. Not all properties are suitable for cavity wall insulation and so a survey would need to be carried out to determine if your property was suitable.

Gas Central Heating: If there are currently no radiators in your property and the property has an existing gas meter, then funding may be available to install a boiler and radiators to supply hot water and heat.

Air Source Heat Pump: An ASHP harnesses heat from the external environment to provide hot water and central heating for your home. This can be a very effective way of heating a home, especially if used in conjunction with solar panels, which would provide free electricity to run the heat pump.

Solar PV: Renewable technology that converts sunlight into electricity, to provide free electric for your home every day of the year.

Room In Roof Insulation: Used to insulate a loft that has been converted into a habitable room.

Are You Impacted By Fuel Poverty?

If the high cost of heating is preventing you from turning it up or even using it, you might be experiencing fuel poverty. This issue is impacting millions across the UK, and there's no immediate end in sight. Fortunately, if you find yourself in such a position, there are positive steps you can take. A big factor contributing to fuel poverty in Angus is the architectural design of many of the homes in the region.

A significant number are stone-built houses and cottages that are prone to becoming chilly and letting in drafts. This makes them much more difficult and expensive to keep warm. Furthermore, a sizable number of homes have no connection to the primary gas grid, leading them to depend on pricier fuel sources such as LPG, coal, oil, and electricity.

How ECO4 Energy Saving Grants Can Help

Obtaining funding through the ECO4 scheme offers a multitude of benefits for homeowners, landlords, and tenants residing in Angus.

Here's why you should consider applying for this support:

Save Money: Upgrading your home with energy-efficient solutions can substantially reduce heating expenses.

Enhanced Comfort: Say goodbye to cold drafts and discomfort by adding insulation, updating heating systems and more.

Environmental Impact: Actively contribute to the environment by decreasing your carbon footprint.

Increase Property Value: Enhancing your home's energy efficiency not only conserves energy but also increases its market appeal and value.

Support For Vulnerable People: For those in low-income households or dealing with certain chronic health issues, you may be eligible for funding, regardless of your benefits status.

Health Benefits: Energy-efficient homes combat the dampness and cold that can exacerbate health issues such as respiratory conditions, arthritis, and mobility challenges.

A Choice of Options: The scheme provides an extensive array of home improvement choices tailored to various needs.

No or Low Upfront Cost: Many of the energy improvements can be implemented with little to no initial costs. Very often, cost is the biggest barrier to homeowners.

Government-Backed: Being a government-endorsed initiative, the ECO scheme ensures all procedures meet compliance standards, providing peace of mind to homeowners.

Local Authority Flexibility (LA Flex): LA Flex empowers local councils to broaden the eligibility guidelines of the scheme, enabling them to assist a greater number of vulnerable individuals within their communities.

Our advisors would be delighted to tell you more about this scheme and how you can qualify even if you don’t receive benefits.

Am I Eligible For ECO4 Energy Efficiency Grants in Angus?

Most homes in Angus that are not connected to the mains gas network, may be eligible to receive an energy saving grant. We may be able to obtain funding if the property is privately owned or privately rented. Can I Get a Grant If I’m Not on Benefits?

Even if you're not on benefits, you might still be eligible for ECO4 funding through the LA Flex scheme. This initiative is open to homeowners, landlords, and tenants in Angus. It specifically caters to homes without a mains gas connection, households with a member having a long-term health condition, or those where the annual income is under £31,000.

While the council doesn't fund LA Flex, they play a role in determining eligibility. Two further government schemes, the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) and Local Authority Delivery (LAD) are also available, both aimed at improving the energy efficiency of properties that have low Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) ratings.
